A  former mob associate affiliated with a breakaway faction of the infamous  Boston-based Patriarca crime family  spent years masquerading as a cattle rancher in Idaho before his arrest two years ago for racketeering, a federal prosecutor said today
“He changed his lifestyle, he changed his appearance, and he changed his name. He tried to become a new person,” Assistant US Attorney Karen Beausey said in her opening statement in the long-awaited trial of Enrico M. Ponzo.

Ponzo, 47, was named in a federal racketeering indictment along with 14 other defendants. He is accused of attempted murder, drug dealing, and extortion. Some of his associates, reputed members of the New England Mafia, were charged with murder.
